Emergency Pet Care Kit

A simple plan to help ensure your pet is not overlooked in an emergency.

What if an emergency prevents you from getting home?

You’re out living your life - at work, shopping, visiting friends or running errands - when something unexpected happens. You become seriously ill, have an accident, are taken to hospital or experience another emergency that prevents you from communicating or returning home.

A practical kit designed to help someone step in and care for your pet when an emergency prevents you from communicating or returning home.

Would anyone know that your pet is waiting at home?

The Emergency Pet Care Kit creates a simple system to alert others that your pet may be home alone, identify the person you have nominated to help and give them the essential information they need to provide immediate and short-term care. It is a practical plan made in advance, rather than something people have to work out during an emergency.

How it works

1. ALERT - Your wallet card and key tag let people know that you have a pet who may be home alone if you are unable to communicate.

2. CONTACT - Your nominated emergency pet carer’s details are available so they can be contacted as quickly as possible.

3. CARE - Your Emergency Pet Care Guide contains the practical information your carer needs to step in and care for your pet.

What’s included in the kit

Emergency Pet Care Guide - A practical booklet containing the essential information someone needs to provide immediate and short-term care for your pet.

Emergency Wallet Card - A card to carry with you that alerts someone that your pet may be home alone and provides your emergency pet carer’s contact details.

Emergency Key Tag - A snap-off key tag carrying the same important message and emergency contact information.

Permanent Marker - Included so you can complete the emergency contact details on your wallet card and key tag as soon as you receive your kit.

Pen - Included so you can begin completing your Emergency Pet Care Guide straight away.

Clear Zip Pouch - Keeps the guide and other components together in one easily identifiable place at home.

I’ve included the pen and permanent marker so there’s nothing else to buy or find. Open the kit, complete it and put your emergency plan in place.

What information is in the Emergency Pet Care Guide?

The guide captures the essential information someone would need to step in and care for your pet if you are unable to get home.

It covers the practical things that can otherwise be difficult to work out in an emergency - including your pet’s routine, food, health and medication, behaviour, veterinary care, access to your home, emergency contacts and other important care instructions.

The aim is simple: your emergency carer should not have to guess.

The guide is designed to contain the practical information someone needs without requiring them to search through your phone, paperwork or home during an emergency.

Who is the Emergency Pet Care Kit for?

The first edition of the Emergency Pet Care Kit has been designed for people with dogs and cats, with versions for other species available on request.

The Emergency Pet Care Kit is for anyone who wants a practical plan in place if something happens to them while they are away from home.

Your nominated emergency pet carer may be your partner, family member, friend, neighbour or another trusted person. The wallet card and key tag not only alert others that you may have a pet waiting at home but also provide the contact details of the person you want contacted to step in and help.

For some people, that person may effectively be both their emergency contact and their emergency pet carer.

Whether you live alone, with a partner, with family or in a shared household, the purpose is the same: if something happens to you, the right person can be contacted and your pet is not overlooked.

You do not need to expect an emergency to prepare for one.

Emergency Pet Care Kit and the Pet Care Bible

Two different plans for two different situations

The Emergency Pet Care Kit is designed for immediate and short-term care when you are temporarily unable to care for your pet or communicate their needs.

The Pet Care Bible is a more detailed record designed for longer-term planning and situations involving a significant or permanent change in your pet’s care.

Together, they help answer two different questions:

What does someone need to know right now?

and

What would someone need to know if my pet’s life and care had to change permanently?
